- The first thing you need to consider is how often you will be wearing the corset. If you plan to wear one every day you should avoid tight-laced items which will constrict your waist (and breathing!). For occasional wear, a waist-clincher is ideal.
- Think about your reasons for wearing a corset. Are you looking to reshape your or simply for a glamorous costume? You might consider a corset with extra reinforcing; seaming, piecing and boning can transform your hips, abdomen and bottom.
- Decide on your fabric as corsets are available in many materials including: pvc, leather and satin. Satin corsets offer the customer a wide colour palette. For the plus-size woman, leather offers a bit of stretch and can be more comfortable.
- Prices for corsets range from less than £100 to over £500, so you’ll need to decide on your budget.
- An overbust corset provides support while creating cleavage; it can create the illusion of an ample cleavage while providing support. Chosen well, a corset can enhance any bust no matter what your cup size. Women with the fuller bust may feel more comfortable in an underbust corset – it will not provide support for the breasts, but can minimise the bust line by smoothing down the ribcage.
- Height is always a consideration when purchasing an overbust corset. If you are tall, you may need to order a ‘long’ version. Underbust corsets, however, are suitable for all heights.
- Sizing for corsets can vary, however, many corsets are sized according to either bra or waist size. If you are a 38C, you should choose a 38. If you’ve been blessed with breasts larger than a D cup, it’s always wise to go up one number, so a 40E should purchase a 42. Sizing a corset is simple – the size numbers refer to bust size. If you are a bust size 40C or D, you would wear a size 40 corset. For higher quality and more expensive corsets, these are sized according to your natural waist size. You need to simply subtract 4 inches from your natural waist size for your corset size. So, if you have a 34″ waist, you would require a 30″ corset.
